How to Make the Outstanding Tiny Desk AI Video, Step by Step
Cast your friends into the Outstanding Tiny Desk: which photo goes in which part, what happens while it records, and how to post it without getting muted.
Oct 26, 2026 · Outstanding Tiny Desk
You have seen it: a band of people who have no business being a band, packed behind a desk full of records, belting "Outstanding" while the singer up front cracks up mid-line, as if the band is better than anyone had a right to expect. This guide walks through making your own Outstanding Tiny Desk AI video, from choosing who plays what to posting it.
What you are actually making
Every version of the meme is built on the same nineteen seconds: the closing number of Charlie Wilson's 2023 Tiny Desk concert for NPR. The shots never change, only the cast does:
| Time | Shot | Who is on camera |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 | The glance | The lead, side-on, turning to the lens |
| 0:01 | The band digs in | Three singers behind the red keyboard |
| 0:07 | The laugh | The lead in close-up, head thrown back |
| 0:13 | The sax solo | The saxophonist, with the front singer at the bottom |
| 0:16 | Fists up | The three singers again |
That fixed structure is good news. You don't have to write a prompt, plan shots or edit anything. You only decide who plays each part.
Step 1: Pick your lead
The lead is the only required part, and it is the one people remember. They open the set with a side glance and then own the long close-up in the middle, the shot where the laugh happens. Give this part to the person the video is about: the friend who lost the bet, the birthday person, the manager on their last day.
Use your best photo here. A sharp, well-lit face turned toward the camera does more for the result than anything else.
Step 2: Fill the band (or don't)
Four more parts are optional:
- Front & center sits behind the red keyboard in the front row and sings every word.
- Backing vocals, left stands at the back on the left and pumps a fist.
- Backing vocals, right stands at the back on the right and throws the last fist in the air.
- Saxophone gets the solo at 0:13.
Any part you leave empty is played by the original musician. A solo set, with only the lead cast, looks like you fronting the real band. A full set turns the whole desk into your crew. Both work; the full band is usually funnier for groups, the solo version is great for one person's big moment.
Step 3: Choose photos that copy well
Whatever isn't in the photo can't make it into the video, so this step matters more than any other.
- One person per photo, face sharp and facing the camera
- Waist up, so the clothes come through (the outfit in the photo is the outfit at the desk)
- Daylight or a bright room, no heavy beauty filters
- No sunglasses, masks or caps pulled low
Skip group photos where every face is tiny, screenshots of video calls and photos taken from far above or below. Cast only adults who agreed to it; children and famous faces stay out of the band.
Step 4: Press record and wait about ten minutes
On the session sheet, drop each photo into its line and press record. Behind the scenes the nineteen seconds are cut into four takes: the glance, the laugh, the band and the sax solo. Each take that has someone cast in it is edited by a video model that keeps the real footage, the camera and the timing, and swaps in your people. When all four are back, they are cut into the five shots and the original recording of "Outstanding" goes underneath.
It takes about ten minutes whether you cast one person or five, because the takes run side by side. You can close the tab; the finished set waits in My videos. If any take fails to record, the credits for the set come back automatically.
Step 5: Post it the right way
You get a 19-second, 720×1280 MP4 with the original sound and no watermark. Before you post:
- Label it as AI. TikTok, Instagram and YouTube all have an AI-generated label. Use it, and say it's a parody in the caption, the way the very first version did.
- Credit the source. "Original: Charlie Wilson's Tiny Desk, 'Outstanding' by the Gap Band" is plenty.
- If the sound gets muted, turn the clip's audio off in the editor and pick the licensed "Outstanding" from the platform's sound picker. The cut lines up with the song, so it still lands.
Common problems and fixes
A face doesn't look like the person. Almost always the photo. Try a sharper one, closer to the face, with even light.
The wrong person got the close-up. The lead line is the close-up. Put your star there.
Clothes look off. The outfit comes from the photo. If someone is in a big coat in their photo, they'll be in a big coat behind the desk.
It's taking longer than ten minutes. Busy hours happen. The set keeps recording on our side, and it will land in My videos without charging you twice.
That's the whole recipe. Pick the lead, fill as much of the band as you like, and let the keys do the rest. Start your Outstanding Tiny Desk or read how this Tiny Desk AI works under the hood.
Put your own crew behind the desk
One photo for the lead is enough. The first set is free when you sign up.
