Tiny Desk AI · cast it, don’t prompt it

Tiny Desk AIwith the real band

Most Tiny Desk AI clips are generated from scratch and look almost right. This one starts from the real footage: Charlie Wilson’s band, the crowded shelves, the red keyboard. You decide who plays each part, and this Tiny Desk AI swaps them in shot by shot, on the original beat.

Under the hood

How this Tiny Desk AI works

There is no prompt box, because the scene is already written. What changes is the cast, and the Tiny Desk AI only touches the people you replace.

  1. 1Track 1

The set is cut into four takes

The nineteen seconds split into the glance, the laugh, the band and the sax solo. A take only goes to the Tiny Desk AI if someone in it was cast.

  2. 2Track 2

Each take is edited, not invented

The Tiny Desk AI is a video-editing model: it rebuilds every take with your people in place of the performers, keeping the camera, the shelves and every gesture.

  3. 3Track 3

The takes go back on the tape

The four takes are cut back into the five shots, the uncast shots stay original, and the 1982 recording runs under the Tiny Desk AI edit, frame for frame.

Who is who

Casting the Tiny Desk AI band

Five parts, and only the lead is required. Any part of the Tiny Desk AI band you skip is played by the original musician.

Lead vocalsShots 1 and 3 · 7.6 seconds
The star of the Tiny Desk AI set: the side glance that opens it and the long laughing close-up in the middle. This is the face people remember, so it deserves the sharpest photo you have.
Front & centerShots 2, 4 and 5
Seated behind the red keyboard in the front row, singing every word, and peeking into the bottom of the sax shot. In a Tiny Desk AI band, this is the spot for whoever is the life of the party.
Backing vocals, leftShots 2 and 5
Standing at the back on the left, swaying and pumping a fist. Bigger gestures read well in this corner of the Tiny Desk AI frame, so pick someone who commits.
Backing vocals, rightShots 2 and 5
Back row on the right, and the one who throws the final fist in the air. The last image of every Tiny Desk AI video belongs to this part.
SaxophoneShot 4 · 3.4 seconds
Side-on with eyes closed, playing the solo like nothing else exists. The Tiny Desk AI solo suits the friend who takes everything a little too seriously.

Known failure modes

Where Tiny Desk AI clips usually go wrong

We broke a lot of takes building this Tiny Desk AI. These are the mistakes you see most in the clips going around, and what this one does about each.

01

The shelves turn into a stock bookcase

Ask a model for two camera angles at once and it repaints the background. This Tiny Desk AI edits one camera set-up per take, so the records, plants and photos stay where NPR left them.

02

Faces change between shots

Generated concerts redraw people in every cut. Here the Tiny Desk AI edits each person into their own part of the real footage, so the lead in the laugh is the lead in the glance.

03

The wrong singer gets the face

With three people on one camera, a Tiny Desk AI can mix up who goes where. Your band photos are laid out left to right and every person is described, so the back row stays the back row.

04

The song drifts off the beat

Clips stitched by hand often slip a few frames. The original recording is laid back under the Tiny Desk AI edit at the exact frame it came from.

Before you press record

Getting a Tiny Desk AI video that looks right

A Tiny Desk AI can only copy what is in the photo, so a few seconds of choosing pays off.

Bring these

  • A recent photo where the face fills a good part of the frame
  • Shoulders and sleeves visible, so the outfit carries over
  • Even light on the face; window light beats a ceiling bulb
  • A different photo for every part, even for twins
  • Photos from the last year or two, so the Tiny Desk AI matches how people look now

Leave these at home

  • Screenshots of video calls or heavily compressed images
  • Photos taken from far below or far above
  • Hands covering the face, or a phone held in front of it
  • Photos of people who haven’t agreed to be in it

From the comments

Tiny Desk AI, answered

What is Tiny Desk AI?+

It’s what people call the AI videos that put new faces into a Tiny Desk concert, most of all Charlie Wilson’s “Outstanding”. This Tiny Desk AI edits your people into that real footage instead of generating a new concert.

Which Tiny Desk concert is it?+

Charlie Wilson’s set for NPR from June 2023, and the nineteen seconds of “Outstanding” that became the meme. It is the only set this Tiny Desk AI offers for now.

Why does it take ten minutes?+

Editing real footage is slow: the Tiny Desk AI rebuilds each take frame by frame. Your four takes run side by side, so a full band takes about as long as a solo.

Do I write a prompt for Tiny Desk AI?+

No. The scene, the camera and the timing of every Tiny Desk AI set are fixed by the original footage. You only choose who plays which part.

Can I use one group photo for everyone?+

Not yet. Each part needs its own photo of one person, which keeps faces large enough for the Tiny Desk AI to copy.

Can I make a version with famous coaches or players?+

No. The viral original used real coaches, but every photo in a Tiny Desk AI set made here has to be you or someone who agreed to it. Your own people are funnier anyway, because the audience knows them.

What resolution is a Tiny Desk AI video?+

Every Tiny Desk AI video is 720×1280, vertical, 30 frames a second and about 19 seconds long, with the original audio. It posts cleanly to TikTok, Reels and Shorts.

Does Tiny Desk AI keep my clothes?+

Yes. A face swap leaves the performers’ outfits behind, but this Tiny Desk AI replaces the whole person, so the jersey, scrubs or hoodie in your photo is what they wear on the set.

Is there a watermark on Tiny Desk AI videos?+

No. Every finished Tiny Desk AI video downloads as a clean MP4. Do add “AI” and “parody” to the caption when you post it.

Who runs this Tiny Desk AI?+

An independent fan project. Charlie Wilson, the Gap Band and NPR have nothing to do with this Tiny Desk AI, and it makes parodies for personal posts only.

Does a failed render cost me?+

No. If any take of your Tiny Desk AI set can’t be recorded, the whole set is refunded to your balance automatically.
